The primary sector

The primary sector accounts for about 35% of the Gross National Product. The agricultural sector employs 60% of the working population.

The emphasis was on the development of food crops production, the main ones being maize, cassava, millet, yam and sorghum, which guarantee food self‐sufficiency to the whole country. Cash crops such as coffee, cocoa, cotton and Palmyra palm constitute, together with phosphates, the export products.
